Responding to the Global Methane Pledge, Anna Jones, Greenpeace UK Head of Food and Forests said:
“A methane pledge that doesn’t include reducing emissions from industrial meat and dairy at source is not only a missed opportunity, but could even incentivise more forest, nature and health-wrecking factory farming for biogas production from manure.
“Meat and dairy reduction offers an immediate solution to cutting methane in the near term because methane dissipates quickly. This means past emissions from animals – particularly cows – soon stop warming the planet if those animals are not replaced. Rapidly phasing out industrial meat production would help us buy precious time.
“Vitally important forests and ecosystems like the Amazon are being destroyed for livestock and animal feed. Cutting methane is the emergency brake; we need to pull it now.”
