Greenpeace response to agricultural companies’ COP26 Forest deal statement

In response to the statement signed by 10 agricultural companies as part of the COP26 Forest deal, John Sauven, ED Greenpeace UK, said:

“This is like putting foxes in charge of the chicken coop. Companies like JBS, Cargill and Bunge have a litany of broken promises, some dating back more than a decade. They have made endless commitments with little or no substance while they continue wrecking forests and destroying the lives and livelihoods of Indigenous Peoples for profit.

“Nothing is being done to tackle demand for the products these companies sell – the very drivers of deforestation – particularly beef and soya for animal feed.

“We don’t have time for more empty pledges. Either these companies fundamentally change their business model, or they need to get out of the way. The industrial meat industry, like its counterpart in the fossil fuel sector, needs to come to an end.”
