Why we’re sharing a vision of defiant hope

We believe that our biggest act of resistance is to stand together - full of passion and determined hope, united in our vision of the world we want to live in.

Areeba Hamid and Will McCallum, joint executive directors of Greenpeace, have chosen to start the year with a powerful message full of passion and determined hope, a rallying call for us to stand united, and fight for the world we want to see.

Areeba and Will kicked off the year by unveiling a compelling video which features Greenpeace supporters sharing their vision of a green, fair and healthy world.

You can watch the video below:

The messages are simple and yet inspiring, and the theme of defiant hope, action towards a positive solution, sets the tone for 2023.

“We’ve both been campaigning for Greenpeace for years - we’ve seen with our own eyes the damage that is being done to our precious planet. But we’ve also seen what can be achieved when we come together as one, loud voice.”

What’s your vision of the world you want to see?

But it’s not just the video they’re sharing – Areeba and Will are keen to keep the conversation going, to hear more from Greenpeace’s millions of supporters – because they get that it’s those supporter voices that make the movement a force to be reckoned with.

So what is your vision of the world you want to see? Is it thriving ecosystems where healthy forests and oceans can help combat the climate crisis?

A peaceful and fair world where people are thriving and companies can no longer get away with destroying communities and livelihoods in the name of profit? Or a world where iconic species like orangutans and blue whales are flourishing, rather than only being remembered as photos of extinct animals.

Will you take two minutes to share your vision of the world you want to see along with thousands of others who have already done so?

This year let’s make a better world possible.

It’s clear that the threat to our world is very real. Our news feeds are saturated with stories of flooding coastlines, destructive storms and fires,  and devastating species extinctions.

Extreme temperatures are leaving families with less food, less clean water, lower incomes and worsening health. And those who are seeing the biggest impact are often people who are already vulnerable and struggling to survive. It’s just not fair.

2.8°C is the UN’s latest warning of how high average temperature rises could go this century, without urgent  action.

2.8°C would mean deadlier storms, ecosystems collapsing and countless communities fighting for  survival. It would be an unforgivable failure by world leaders.

But what unites us, is our collective vision for the way our world ought to be – our certainty that a green, fair and healthy world is within reach.

We refuse to give up hope – because by working together, we can and will create a better world for everyone.

Greenpeace’s agenda for 2023

This year together we’ll be focussing our energy into these key areas:

  • Spearheading a global campaign to make polluting fossil fuel companies pay for the damage they cause.
  • Championing big climate solutions from home insulation to offshore wind, so the UK becomes  a model for climate action globally.
  • Demanding governments protect 30% of our oceans by 2030,  safeguarding wildlife, coastal communities and our climate.
  • Saving forests from destruction, to protect wildlife, fight the climate crisis and stand with Indigenous Peoples.
  • Winning a strong, global treaty that limits single-use plastic production for good.

It’s time for us to take the lead.

Let’s face it, our leaders have utterly failed to protect our climate, our planet and those who call it home.  Global governments and corporate greed has pushed our planet to the brink.

The solutions we need are obvious – and the people ignoring them have never been more visible. We need to end our dependence on expensive, unstable, fossil fuels, stop the fishing frenzy that’s driving our oceans towards collapse,  and stop tearing down the rainforests so corporations can line their pockets.

That’s why this year, we’re calling on everyone to bravely stand for what they believe in, and to join us in fighting for it like never before.
