Overwhelming support for Greenpeace following court case fine

The support Greenpeace has received since being fined £80,000 for attempting to stop BP drilling for new oil has been staggering. Here’s a message of thanks from John Sauven, our Executive Director, and Meena Rajput, one of the activists

On Friday 3 July, Greenpeace received the verdict of a court case brought by BP’s contractor, Transocean. Our attempt to block a BP oil rig from drilling for 30 million barrels of new oil in the North Sea in June 2019 landed us with an £80,000 fine.

The support we’ve received in less than a week has been incredible – I’m overwhelmed by the generosity. I knew the risks we were taking when we planned this action, and that I might face jail time. But the response has made me more determined than ever to stand up to big oil.

Meena and I recorded the short video above as a thank you to everyone who has donated to our Climate Action Fund.

We are already seeing the impacts of the climate emergency all around the world and urgent action is needed from those who have the power to end it. With your support we’ll continue to fight BP in the courts to stop their drilling and secure the renewable future we need.

Greenpeace is independent. We don’t accept any funding from governments, corporations or political parties – our work is funded by ordinary people. That gives us the freedom to confront governments and corporations responsible for the destruction of the natural world and push for real change.

If you haven’t already and feel you are able, please could you set up a regular gift to support our work? We can then press on with our challenge to get BP’s permit completely quashed and stop them from drilling for new oil in the North Sea.

Regular giving enables us to plan ahead and execute the kind of actions that have seen us successfully campaign for a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1982 and force in the Ultra Low Emission Zone in London 2018 and many other wins. Will you be part of helping us stop addiction to fossil fuels, switch to clean, renewable energy and transport and save and protect our forests and oceans?

Thank you for giving what you can to help secure a greener, safer and more peaceful planet.
